WWO Haiti

We have been providing early child development, protection and training programs for children and adults in Haiti since the devastating earthquake in 2010.

WWO Haiti

The Haitian spirit is resilient. Despite current gang violence and political instability, extreme poverty and hardship, WWO is walking together with families and communities to create safe spaces for children to play, learn and thrive.

Education in Haiti is not free. School fees, exam and book fees, uniforms and shoes make sending a child to school a challenging decision for every family. Once at school, children are mainly taught through lecture and rote memorization. A student who enters the 1st grade without the listening and language skills needed to keep up with teacher instruction, quickly becomes lost and overwhelmed, leading to high repetition and drop-out rates.

Through our Element of Play® program and partnerships across Haiti, WWO is strengthening the listening and language skills of young children and building the capacity of preschool teachers, adults and other professionals to deliver play-based lessons in the classroom or the community.

Impact in Haiti

Our programming shifts and changes as the needs of the communities we serve shift and change. Students who attend our community-based lessons or access one of the preschools where we work are 2 times more likely to enter 1st grade ready to learn.

Programs in Haiti

  • Element of Play®

In Haiti, hundreds of children a year are receiving regular developmental screenings, accessing quality programming, and entering school with the language, cognitive and social skills needed to succeed. For many children, this is their first experience with a structured play-based program where they can interact with their peers, learn and play together.

  • Positive Youth Development

For many of our youth interns who have dropped out of school, this is their first opportunity and exposure to the workforce, and their first chance to feel positively engaged in their own community. This combination of programming for young children and life skills programming for youth as role models, has a dynamic effect, with change and growth happening on both sides.

  • Kan Etwal "Camp of Stars"

In Haiti, Kan Etwal activities are designed to teach children living with serious illnesses life-skills, interpersonal-skills, healthcare knowledge, and to renew their resilience and sense of hope in the most exciting and creative ways. Campers have opportunities to bond, build friendships and increase their self confidence.
