Ethiopia
In January 2007 WWO, in partnership with AIDS Health Foundation (AHF) which treats adults with HIV/AIDS, opened the WWO-AHF Family Health Center in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The Center is a full-service care facility for treating and monitoring the care of orphans and children in families with HIV/AIDS, and for the treatment of adults with HIV/AIDS. The Center helps to bring orphaned children into the mainstream of community life. In addition to life-saving pediatrics and antiretroviral medications, the Center will offer a host of programs, including nutritional cooking and job training. Children have dedicated play areas in the clinic and participate in art and music projects. In collaboration with Right To Play and UNICEF, WWO has developed and facilitates an orphan soccer league in Addis Ababa.
The Family Health Center will be a "feeder" for the new WWO Academy in Addis – a private school for orphans and other children with and without HIV/AIDS. The Academy includes an integrated Arts and Humanities Program that will offer workshops, Visiting Artists, and performances and exhibitions open to the community. The Academy will also house a community library, computer workshops, and more! The Academy will work in partnership with the Ministry of Education and a local government elementary school. Generous donors include a lead gift from the Edward and Leslye Phillips Family Foundation and ArtsVenture.
WWO currently is responsible for the evaluation, treatment, medication and all follow-up for all children with HIV/AIDS at six Ethiopian orphanages. We are committed to local capacity building as a major goal, and to date, we have held two training sessions for pediatricians and other health providers so that they can treat children with HIV/AIDS in their own cities and villages. WWO has also hired one of the first MSW graduates from the New School of Social Work at the University of Addis Ababa to work with our children as well as with orphanage staff.
