Bulgaria
In our six sites in Bulgaria, The WWO Early Intervention (EI) Program is affectionately nicknamed the "granny or baba" program. First opened in Targovishte, there are now programs in Rousse, Pleven, and Yambol.
Four programs are underwritten by generous donors (Jim and Nadine Hartnett, Robert Brenner, Janet and Howard Kagan and Ramye and Garry Spire) who understand the enormous importance of "taking children out of anonymity" -- by a child’s having a relationship with one caring, loving, attentive adult. The "grannies" keep journals documenting their children’s progress. Their love for the youngsters is apparent on every page. In addition to the children’s great strides, the program engages retirees, from the local community in meaningful work as they become “babas” to these children.
In January 2007, WWO opened its first granny program in Nadezhda, Rousse for children from ages 3 to 7.
