2007 WWO Benefit Gala Raises $1.4 Million
Katie Couric hosted our 10th Anniversary Benefit Gala. Mary-Louise Parker and Cynthia McFadden presented Honorary Orphan Ranger awards to Liya Kebede and Silda Wall Spitzer. Christine Ebersole, Donna Murphy and the cast of Grease performed from the hit Broadway show.
The gala was co-chaired this year by Board Chair Janet Kagan and Board member Mary Knobler. More than $1.4 million was raised, including over $60,000 donated that night at the event. Katie Couric, CBS anchor and managing editor of the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric, hosted the benefit for the second year and in keeping with the evening's theme, spoke warmly about how much she had gained from being involved with WWO. Actress Mary-Louise Parker, star of TV's Weeds presented an Honorary Orphan Ranger award to supermodel and WHO Goodwill Ambassador, Liya Kebede. Cynthia McFadden, co-anchor of ABC News “Nightline” and “Primetime,” presented Silda Wall Spitzer, the first lady of New York State and founder of Children for Children, her award, citing her efforts on behalf of schoolchildren throughout the state and the nation. The audience was thrilled by songs by Tony-award winning first ladies of Broadway, Christine Ebersole and Donna Murphy. Laura Osnes and Max Crumm, the stars of Grease were joined by members of the cast in a rousing finale to the evening. The entertainment was directed by Tony-award winner Kathleen Marshall and the stage manager was Peter Hanson. Ms. Marshall, Ms. Ebersole, Ms. Murphy and Mr. Hanson have volunteered their services to all three of WWO's benefits, and the cast of Grease volunteered to perform as well.
